Dr Dhan is the youngest son of a local Maitland medical family. His father Dr Thiru Thiruchelvam or Dr Chelvam to his many patients was the longest serving GP practising in the local community at the time of his retirement.
His brother is long time Newcastle ENT Surgeon Dr Thya Thiruchelvam. Dr Dhan attended Maitland High School. After graduating from medicine at Sydney University he trained in General Surgery in Sydney and obtained a General Surgical fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
He then went on to pursue many years of further sub specialty training in Melbourne and the UK in the area of Upper GI Surgery and Weight Loss Surgery.
He has been in practice in Melbourne since 2009 and has a successful Surgical practice at St Vincent’s Melbourne, St Vincent’s Private and Epworth Hospitals.
After many years of practice, he now returns home to the Hunter to spend time with and support his family.
Dr Dhan Thiruchelvam has opened a Sub Specialist Upper GI and Weight Loss Surgery Practice in Hamilton Newcastle.
He is delighted to be able to assist the people of the Hunter Region.
